Anatomical Dissection: A Positive Experiencen for Venezuelan First Year Medical Students International Journal of Morphology
Romero Reverón,Rafael.
An anonymous survey was handed out to 616 first year medical students of the José María Vargas School of Medicine of the Central University of Venezuela during the six academic years from 2002 and 2008, so that they answer it voluntarily after a cadaver dissection session, after the first unit of the practice syllabus of Gross Anatomy I had completed. The results of these surveys delivered to first year medical students report a positive response to their initial experience with a cadaver in the anatomical dissection room. In fact, the students described this initial experience as positive in a 52.22 %, while 34,25 % referred to it as very positive, 7.14 % as stressing and only a 1.13 % rated it as traumatic. In the case of only 13.63 % of these students...

Contemporary Staining of Arterial System with Cadaver Fixation: An Experimental Study International Journal of Morphology
Ghorbani,Rostam; Tavakol,Zahra; Ghanbari,Ali.
Although many methods are investigated, cadavers have unique role for education of gross anatomy. This study was performed to make cadaveric based gross anatomy more enjoyable and decrease the time needed for achievement of arterial system for teachers and learners. The adult rabbits in control (n=3) and experimental groups (n=9) sacrificed following deep anesthesia. The samples were fixed by injection of fixative solution to the left ventricle and the corps dropped to the traditional fixative liquid for at least 1 month. The injected fixative solution of experimental group contained stained human red blood cells. The red blood cells stained by eosin (0.25% in saline) for 30 minutes and injected between two injections of fixative. After passing the period...

Contribution Towards the Anatomy of the Esophageal Hiatus and its Relationship with the Presence of Bundles of Collagen Fibers in its Margins International Journal of Morphology
Filho,José Jeová de Oliveira; Filho,Benedito Herani; Reis,Francisco Prado; Feitosa,Vera Lúcia Correa; Aragão,José Aderval.
The aim was to detect the presence of bundles of collagen fibers in the margins of the esophageal hiatus and establish if there is any relationship of these bundles with the anatomy of the hiatus. Ten adult male cadavers, with no gross anatomical alteration caused by trauma, surgery or disease, upon the esophageal hiatus were used in the study. A piece of anatomical structure comprising the diaphragm with the esophageal hiatus and adjacent tissues was removed, dissected and 10% formol embedding. With the aid of a digital caliper, measurements of the perimeter of the esophageal hiatus were done both in the abdominal and thoracic sides. For the structural study each margin was divided in six sections. Staining techniques of Masson and Picrosirius-hematoxilin...

Cyamella in Man - Its Morphology and Review of Literature International Journal of Morphology
Reddy,Sreenivasulu; Vollala,Venkata Ramana; Rao,Rajashekar.
A sesamoid bone is a little bone embedded in a joint capsule or tendon. We observed a very rare sesamoid bone (cyamella) in the popliteus muscle of a 48 - year - old male cadaver. Further, the related literature is reviewed and the probable functions, morphology and clinical significance of the variation are discussed

Dextrocardia and Situs Inversus Totalis in a Nigerian Cadaver: A Case Report of Rare Anomaly International Journal of Morphology
Ofusori,David A; Okwuonu,Christina U; Ude,Raymond A; Adesanya,Olamide A.
This report describes an adult male cadaver with dextrocardia and situs inversus totalis in a Nigerian cadaver. The photographic illustrations revealed transposition of some of the visceral organs such that the stomach and spleen were located on the right and the liver and gall bladder on the left. Also, the left lung was tri-lobed while the right was uni-lobed. The heart was flattened and flipped to the right thus, transposing the great vessels. The report showed that dextrocardia and situs inversus exists amongst Nigerians and possibly Africans and therefore wish to recommend early medical examination since patients with this condition are unaware of their unusual anatomy until they seek medical attention for an unrelated condition. Early detection may...

Multiple Arterial Variations in the Right Upper Limb of a Caucasian Male Cadaver International Journal of Morphology
Al-fayez,Musaed A; Kaimkhani,Zahid Ali; Zafar,Muhammad; Darwish,Hasem; Aldahmash,Abdullah; Al-Ahaideb,Abdul Aziz.
Anatomical variations of the arterial patterns in the upper limb have been describe in many anatomical studies, but the occurrence of four variations in a ipsilateral upper limb is rare. These arterial variations were observed in the right upper limb of a 65 -year old Caucasian male cadaver during routine dissection in the anatomy department, College of Medicine at the King Saud University, Riyadh. These arterial variations include: 1) a large common trunk of the axillary artery giving origin to subscapular artery, profunda brachii artery, common circumflex humoral artery and superior ulnar collateral artery, 2) superficial brachial artery; 3) superficial brachioulnar artery, and 4) the radialis indicis branch from superficial palmar arch. Appreciation of...

Software to Browse the Pictures of Two Knees in Diverse States of Dissection, Flexion and Rotation International Journal of Morphology
Chung,Beom Sun; Park,Jin Seo; Jang,Hae Gwon; Chung,Min Suk.
The aim of this study was to produce pictures of the knees from an embalmed cadaver and another fresh cadaver with various levels of dissection, flexion, and rotation, consequently to aid medical students and doctors in studying knee anatomy. In this study, we intended to improve the accessibility of the numerous knee photographs, by entering them into our own made browsing software. This software could be downloaded for free from the website (anatomy.co.kr). In the software, a displayed array consisted of four pictures: a knee at three different depths of dissection and the same knee in flexed state. The knee could be rotated interactively at every 5° angle. Annotation of important knee structures could be seen at 90° angle intervals. With the browsing...

Tracheal Length in Adult Human: The Results of 100 Autopsies International Journal of Morphology
Cinar,Ugur; Halezeroglu,Semih; Okur,Erdal; Inanici,Mehmet Akif; Kayaoglu,Semra.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the average tracheal length and number of the tracheal cartilages in Turkish people, with emphasis on the relationships to body height and sex. A hundred fresh human cadaver tracheas were harvested from 75 males and 25 females. Age, sex and body height of cadavers were recorded. All the neck and intrathoracic structures were removed. The tracheal length was measured between the subcricoid level to the carina in resting and maximally stretched positions. Average tracheal length and number of the tracheal cartilages were compared in different body height groups in both sexes. We found that average body height was 160±6.4 cm and average tracheal length in resting position was 8.5±1 cm (range 6.511 cm) in females...

Virtual Dissection Table Including the Visible Korean Images, Complemented by Free Software of the Same Data International Journal of Morphology
Chung,Beom Sun; Shin,Dong Sun; Brown,Paul; Choi,Jack; Chung,Min Suk.
The objective of this study was to introduce the complementary relationship between virtual dissection table (simply, table) and free software, since authors tried to aid interested people in their studying digital human anatomy. Visible Korean (VK) team had presented the serially sectioned images and outlined images of a male cadaver. Thereafter, Anatomage (San Jose, CA) manufactured the table by making 3-dimensional (3D) volume models from the data. Separately, the VK team reconstructed surface models from the same data and inputted the models in portable document format (PDF) file, which can be opened on the personal computer. The software to browse the sectioned and outlined images was also programmed by VK team. In this report, the table and the VK...
